Catherine Zhang ’22 will join pioneering technologist program

Where is home? Pennington, NJ

Do you have other major or minors other than sociology? I'm also a double major in computer science.

Tell us about your journey studying sociology, What brought you to this field? I admittedly knew very little about the field of sociology before coming to college, but after taking some introductory sociology courses, I immediately decided that I wanted to pursue the major. Delving into subjects like inequality and how institutions shape social phenomena was really fascinating, and I realized that I had found an academic discipline that analyzes many of the ideas that I already spent my free time reading and thinking about.

What are the highlights as a sociology student? The greatest highlight has definitely been learning under the brilliant faculty members in the department. It’s been a privilege having sociology professors who are so well-spoken and knowledgeable across various research areas within sociology. Additionally, getting to focus my academic studies learning more about issues that I care deeply about, like socioeconomic inequality, has always been very gratifying. Lastly, writing my honors thesis was one of my most rewarding academic pursuits in college, and I was lucky to have such a supportive advisor in Professor Bischoff.

What are your plans after graduation? I'll be working as an Associate Product Manager for Schmidt Futures, a tech non-profit founded by the former Google CEO, Eric Schmidt in New York City.

The Schmidt Futures Associate Product Manager (APM) program is a first-of-its-kind pathway for cohorts of university graduates to use their technical degrees for public benefit. The Associate Product Manager program brings together talented young technologists for two years and matches them to rotational opportunities to solve hard social problems.
